THANK YOU
2024 marks my second year at IHC and my experience has only improved each year! I was so elated to be able to return to IHC and continue working with the kids I met last year and keep building upon some already strong relationships.
Going into the season, I knew this would be a different summer. The music program was now fully under my direction, but some of the kids would still expect things to be run how they were in the past and that expectation could be hard to break. However, my idea of a “different summer” and what actually transpired were two vastly different things.
Firstly, I was gifted an amazing team of Music Assistants this year, and we’ve connected as a group on both a professional and personal level. Admittedly, I was a bit nervous about how well we’d all get on as a group; part of me feared our relationships would only be work-oriented and that I myself would struggle to be an effective, communicative, and personable director. All of these fears were left behind within the first week of camp, and I’m so happy to say that I’ve made three very good friends over the course of these past two months. In addition to bonding well, there was a great sense of innovation they brought with them that has persisted through the season. They came up with ideas for new activities and approaches, and pushed me to try things in a way that was different to how they were done in the past.
Secondly, it was the connections with the kids that truly set this summer apart. Being able to see many of the same kids (and meet some new ones, too) allowed me to pick back up where we left off last year with them. Having already known certain kids would be a good fit for certain projects, we were able to start writing and recording new songs very quickly. For the kids who are devoted musicians, I love seeing their musicality and technical skills develop from one year to the next. Through the theater productions, I got to meet a handful of kids who are excellent musicians but just hadn’t reached out to me about working in the studio more, or perhaps they didn’t know that opportunity was there for them. In regards to the camp music programs I facilitate, I’ve always said that my objective is to get whichever kids who want to be working in the studio to do just that, and sometimes it takes reaching out to someone for them to realize an opportunity is at hand. I can’t wait to see all of these musicians again and what they’ll bring back to camp with them when they’re another year older and are continuing to grow artistically.
This album reflects all of my aforementioned sentiments and much more. It’s also the largest camp album I’ve worked on, and that’s a testament to the sheer amount of creativity from both kids and staff that flowed through the studio walls this summer. This is an album of songs written from the hearts of many, and recorded with the same passion with which they were written. I strived to make an authentic album both in terms of the sentiment behind each of these songs and in a technological sense. We prided ourselves on always wanting to capture the best performance from each of these kids and pushing them for just one more take to get the best results.
To close this off, I want to thank by name my three Music Assistants: Matt, Sammi and Rania; you all are now very good friends of mine and I certainly hope to see you again in this place next year. Our workflow and team bonding was among the best I’ve ever experienced in a studio. And everything I’ve mentioned up to this point as well as so much more would not be possible without Pete Kalvert and Music Ascension, Matty Layman, Mark Tjaden, Dave and Shelley Tager, and Joel and Lauren Rutkowski. You all support me and this program in a plethora of ways and I can’t thank you enough for doing so.
Thank You All,
Jacob Souders
