Three years goes by much quicker than one would expect. 

There was something that felt a little different about this year at Camp IHC compared to my two previous summers, and I’ve realized it’s a feeling of independence. 2025 was the summer I felt that I’d truly taken this music program and made it something more unique and different to what its previous incarnations looked like. Yes, we still made an album and played some of our old favorite games as in years past, but the approach I took to these things and the people I got to do it with made the results vastly different from before. 

One of the most rewarding parts of being a returning staff member is getting to see many of the kids for several years in a row and see them grow up. What makes being a returning music staff member even more rewarding is seeing the abilities and musicianship of some of the kids grow and improve year after year, and knowing that I’ve played at least some small part in the foundations of their musical journey. In my time at IHC, I’ve met one of the best drummers I’ve ever worked with, a guitarist who’s going to out play me by the time he starts high school, and singers who will absolutely be stars on Broadway sooner than later, amongst several other very talented young people; kids. Kids who I’ve been blessed to get to see and work with year after year, and I can only hope that our paths later on in our musical careers. 

2025 yielded the strongest music team I’ve seen in my time at IHC, and arguably the best music team the camp has ever seen. I was thrilled to have Rania and Mariano back for music and DJ positions respectively, and Tamsyn was an amazing addition to the music staff. Each of them brought their own unique artistic ideas and perspectives to help shape the direction of the program this summer and I thank them so much for that. We shared music, inspired each other, and made each other a bit more curious about the world around us. And this summer certainly would not have yielded the results they did without the three of them by my side. I’ve truly loved getting to work with all of them and hope to continue doing so in the future, both at camp and in the real world.

Which then brings me to the final bit of this note. Summer 2025 had a sense of conclusiveness for me since I’ve reached the end of a three year agreement with IHC, but I certainly hope to return again next year; it all just depends on which way the wind blows. But what I know for certain is that in my time at Camp IHC I have continued to build the best music program I can, and I think it shows. The relationships I’ve made with staff from across the world and kids from across the country are some of the most rewarding, and I love getting to hear the evolution of the camp albums over time. I really hope I get to keep doing this work for a little while longer.

Lastly, I want to thank Matty Layman, Mark Tjaden and Joel and Lauren Rutkowski for their continued support and investment in me and this incredible music program. They truly understand the benefits of a high quality program like this and have been so supportive and encouraging of the work I and the rest of the music team do. And finally I want to thank Pete Kalvert and Music Ascension for giving me this camp opportunity in the first place. I’ve worked with Pete for four summers and he is always right behind me when it comes to new ideas and innovation in the music program. Pete wants the program to be shaped in the vision of people younger than him and he’s allowed me the freedom to do just that, all while having my back. He’s an incredible music educator and one of the best people I’ve had the chance to work with.
